Practical checklists to help you prepare for your visit, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Before your consultation

Bring these items so your assessment can be focused and efficient.

  • Photo ID and insurance details (if applicable).
  • Previous X-rays, MRI, or CT reports — on disc or printed.
  • List of current medications and allergies.
  • Operation notes or physiotherapy letters from prior care.
  • Short written summary: when pain started, what makes it worse or better.

After surgery

General reminders — always follow the instructions given to you at discharge.

  • Take prescribed pain relief and blood thinners as directed.
  • Keep the wound clean and dry unless told otherwise.
  • Use your sling, brace, or crutches as instructed.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments.
  • Seek urgent care for fever, spreading redness, severe pain, or numbness.

Rehabilitation & exercises

Recovery is gradual. These milestones are typical — your plan may differ.

  • Early phase: reduce swelling, protect the repair, gentle range of motion as allowed.
  • Mid phase: strengthen supporting muscles with physiotherapy guidance.
  • Late phase: return to sport or work only when cleared by your surgeon.

Shoulder & sports — quick guide

Common reasons patients book: rotator cuff pain, instability, frozen shoulder, or sports injury.

  • Note whether pain is at rest, at night, or with overhead activity.
  • Bring sport or work demands you need to return to.

Joint replacement — preparation

For shoulder, hip, or knee replacement planning.

  • Dental check if advised — reduce infection risk before surgery.
  • Arrange home help and clear trip hazards before surgery.
  • Stop smoking if possible — it aids healing.

Trauma & fractures

If you have an acute injury, seek emergency care first when needed.

  • For clinic review: bring all emergency and hospital discharge papers.
  • Do not remove splints or dressings unless instructed.
